Got Stress?

Our tag line this team challenge is..."one decision can change your life." I did my best to convince my Healthy Weigh friends this week that using healthy COPING SKILLS could be that decision! I preached it like it was easy. I preached it like it doesn't hurt and I preached it like it's as simple as making a decision, all while I tried my best to deliver it with tenderness and love. Based on my own life experiences and some of our healthy weigh family's experiences , I know that life is hard and pain happens, however learning to cope with these hard life experiences can and will make all of the trials easier...oh, and help you lose your weight and keep it off too!

Coping skills are the thoughts, emotions and behaviors that you use to adjust to changes that take place in your life. Although I've taught the coping skills lesson for years, this week I shared some new information that I know will make a difference.  I looked at two kinds of coping.
Problem-focused coping and Emotion-focused coping.

Problem-focused coping: Directed towards reducing or eliminating a stressor. Adapting a behavior.

Emotion-focused coping: Directed towards changing ones own emotional reaction or response.

Let's look at problem-focused coping...

With Problem-focused coping we use problem focused strategies to deal with the cause of our problem. We do this by finding out more information on the problem and we learn new skills to manage the problem.

Problem-focused coping is aimed at changing or eliminating the source of the stress.

There are three problem-focused strategies that are important to use. Taking control (when it’s in your control) seeking information, and then evaluating the pros and cons.

How many of the huge stressors of our life do we really have control over and sit idly feeling out of control, stuff our feelings and stay exactly where we are???

I couldn't help but think about Joshua Chamberlain, Gettsburg 1863 who when faced with a decision to do nothing or do something, gave the command to "CHARGE!" That one decision changed the course of history even up to this present day!

How many times do we allow the stress of our current circumstance to drive us to eating, drinking, shopping, when we really do have control over it! We can “DO something” and change things. We can use problem-focused coping to change things and be healthy and whole.

What areas of your life right now do you need to do something???
Is it as simple as clean your house? Or as difficult as change jobs? Are you going to allow something out there to tell you you can’t change??? Or are you going to “do something??”
Problem-focused coping...that might be the easy one. :-)

What about emotion-focused coping?

It involves releasing pent-up emotions, managing hostile feelings, meditating or using relaxation techniques. Emotion–focused coping is a skill to alleviate stress by minimizing, reducing, or preventing the emotional components of the stressor.  The focus of this coping skill is to change the meaning of the stressor or transfer attention away from it.

Change the meaning of the stressor...just what does that look like?  I encouraged everyone to take a journey that I've recently been on. Identifying painful events from my past but then finding the redemptive perceptive in each one of those things. What did that pain do for you? Who are you today because of that hard life event? Finding redemption from a painful time changes the meaning of the stressor.  When you can do that, the event ceases to be so painful.

We also took a look at transferring attention away from the stressor. This is where you have to be careful…it doesn’t mean drown your sorrows, or stuff your feelings. It means laugh, spend time with loved ones, go to the beach and look at the waves, listen to music and get lost in it, worship… transfer the attention away from the death of a loved one, a serious illness, a sorrowful situation. Sometimes we need to set aside those things that are out of our control and breathe in goodness.

Transferring attention away from a problem…that can be a positive thing for a short period of time, however it can be detrimental to you and your health over an extended period. It’s still so crucial to process the chunks in our cup right??? It's important to deal with the stuff, the things that have caused our stress so that we keep living a forward focused life instead of spending our lives looking backwards.

Coping…it’s HUGE! Not only in weight loss, but in life. When we cope…we will be whole, happy, free, at peace, content…anybody want any of that???

When we avoid, numb and stuff our feelings…we end up broken  unhappy, incarcerated, in turmoil, discontent…anybody?

"Back Packs Are Life!"

This week Glenda and I introduced one of my favorite lessons taught at The Healthy Weigh. I learned about "Back Packs" 15 years ago, and it was life changing for me.
Learning to control what you can and let go of things you can't control is not only freeing, it's smart!

At first look, clients wonder what "back packs" have to do with weight loss. It doesn't take long to begin to understand the concept. The more you understand about self-control, personal responsibility and emotional ownership, the easier it is to make choices for yourself regarding your weight loss program and your health.

As we begin to look at the 12 things we are responsible for, in control of, and are to take ownership of, I can't help but think about my personal life at present time.  Just a couple of years ago I married off my only son. I've been been referring to my "back pack" list often lately!  When I first learned about back packs, my son was 10 years old!  I thought at the time that mastering the art of "staying in my own back pack" was the key to raising an independent young man.  I was right, but now, I am keenly aware that "staying in my own back pack" will be the key to not only me moving on and embracing a new season of life, but also allowing my son and his new beautiful wife, to grow and become who they need to be! Back packs never wear out...they just take on a new look! I love it!

Over the years I've seen clients, friends and family, using all their time, and energy on things out side of their control. Those things appear to get bigger and bigger, because we have no control over them, and we appear to get smaller and smaller. The things that we DO have control of...the 12 things in our back pack are the ONLY things that will help us become the women and men we were intended to be. Strong, healthy and full of love.

I gave some fun examples of "back pack violations" and had Glenda respond to them.  We discussed everything from having a flaky Team Challenge partner to worrying about what others think about your weight loss program. The key to living out your very best life always comes back to owning and being responsible for what you CAN control, and leaving the rest alone!

We looked at the difference between feeling responsible TO others and feeling responsible FOR others. I encourage you to look at the chart on the back of this important control guide and work to become a person who is responsible TO others. We had some great discussions in the after class about children and back packs all the way up to the elderly. Glenda again, helped us all understand appropriate boundaries there too.

This is a lesson that you will want to share with your children, your spouses and everyone you spend time with. I pray that it will be as life changing for you as it was and still is for me. I did say, with much passion I might add, that the key to our healthy eating and our control of this "food thing" all comes down to what we talked about this week...back packs, and what we'll talk about next week...coping skills!  for that reason...

Your Challenge for the week:
  • Download and listen to week # 4 "Coping Skills ~ Feeling Your Way Through Life" and do the homework provided.

  • Get in three 30 minute walks in the sunshine ( I HAD to throw this one in!!)
Congratulations to our winning teams of the week!

Noon:  Team "Asian Fusion" Elayne and Margie with a 1.69% of weight loss!
6PM: Team "Full Nelson" Erica and Carrie with a 1.99% of weight loss!

Great job Teams!!

Glenda ended our lesson by showing us a plaque she received as a gift...it fit so perfect with our theme for the day. Here it is;

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the people
I cannot change, the courage to change the ONE I can,
and the wisdom to know it's ME!"

Always encouraging you,
Letha
