Maintenance and Relapse...It's all apart of CHANGE
What a week at The Healthy Weigh! We moved on into the Maintenance and Relapse stages of change and were reminded again of the work it takes not only to lose weight, but more importantly to keep it off for life! No matter what stage our self-changers were in tonight, they were challenged and inspired to spend the time and the energy it takes really change. Few self-changers realize just how much change really costs! They fail to recognize that it took years to establish their problem behavior, and believe that they should reverse these deeply embedded patterns in a few weeks! In reality, it takes about 6 months of concentrated effort in the action stage before they can move into the maintenance stage of the program.
Our Alumni could relate today with my message on maintenance and relapse. They understand what it takes to stay at goal weight. Maintenance is the stage where you work to consolidate the gains you attained during the action stage to prevent lapses and relapse. Maintenance is a critical stage of change and can take from as little as 6 months to as long as a life time. Without a strong commitment to maintenance, there will surely be relapse, usually back to the pre-contemplation or contemplation stage.
They also understand that relapse is a process not an event. In order to understand relapse prevention you have to understand the stages of relapse. Relapse starts weeks or even months before the physical relapse.
There are three stages of relapse:
1. Emotional Relapse
2. Mental Relapse
3. Physical Relapse
We spent time talking about what these stages look like and how to prevent yourself from moving through them to the physical relapse.
We covered a lot of information about maintenance and relapse, but it came down to this...stay connected, stay committed and you'll have a great chance of making change permanent!
On that note, I was excited to announce the theme of the Fall Team Challenge. We are going to spend time this fall learning how to "Let it Go." Letting go of the things that keep us stuck. Letting go of the things that don't serve us so that we can move into our bright futures. I know it will be another outstanding 10 weeks! I can't wait!
We celebrated some more great weight loss this week along with learning more about change!
